Both Saturday and Sunday were beautiful days for racing and watching. It was a good showing for Mid Hudson crews. For Mike and Warren, it was their 1st time competing in this race after many years as spectators. Their extensive training paid off with a very good standing in the final results and no mishaps on the course. Bob Auchincloss raced his Echo single in a special recreational category prior to the regular Sunday racing and won his age group.

The weather at “the Fish” broke with tradition this year and turned beautiful and sunny - a perfect end to the racing season for our club. We had competitiors in several events, including Mike Griffin in the men’s masters single in the early morning, then Helen and Warren Buhler racing their new double in the mixed doubles race and Geoff Borggaard and Bill Davies in the men’s masters doubles.
Late in the day, a mostly-novice women’s 8+ raced, with Jonni Griffin coxing for Elizabeth Bondar, Janet Wood, Amy Huber, Joan Carter, Linda St. Pierre, Hai Longworth, Debbie Easton and Sue Metecheccia. A mixed 8+ finished the day’s racing with Bill Davies coxing for Kurt Quackenbush, Randy Harwood, Terri Luper, Dotty Martinez, Jeannie Harwood, Judy Lombardi, Tom West and Patrick Downes.
The doubles team of Geoff and Bill had the best finish of the day for us, at 7th place of 19 boats competing; to their dismay, they were beat on handicap by a couple of boats. Everyone had a fun day at the regatta, enjoying food and comraderie under our new blue canopy.
East Arm Sprint Challenge at Greenwood Lake: May 22, 2005
Geoffrey Borggaard, Bill Davies, Mike Griffin and John Roger raced singles in this 500m sprint. The race is held on a two-lane course at Greenwood Lake, New York, near the New Jersey border. Rowing hard, Geoff returned with the gold medal in his sprint! Bill finished just 3 seconds behind the course record-holder. Geoff and John paired up to row a double later in the day, and captured the gold in their event; they looked strong and fast!
Although the day was overcast, the usual spring rain held off so all could enjoy the friendly crowd and a fun first-of-the-season race.
Diamond State Masters Regatta, Delaware: July 24, 2005 Bill Davies and Ray Neville brought their singles to Delaware for a hot and humid race day in mid-summer on a small flat-water pond at St Andrew’s School, Middletown, Delaware.
Bill was happy his race was the first of the day, by 10 AM the air was steamy.
Bill finished fourth of six in his 1000 meter, lightweight men’s race, a satisfying finish only a few seconds off first place, given he was the senior sculler in the race. Unfortunately, Ray suffered equipment problems and was unable to finish his race.
Race Between the Bridges, Poughkeepsie, NY: August 6, 2005
This local regatta is the perfect opportunity for our newly-graduated Learn-to-Row novices to test their skill at racing. This year we had a “barely-mixed” 8+ of 7 novice women and 1 novice man enter the regatta. They earned the bronze medal in a well fought 1000m row to the Cornell boathouse! Their success has them eager to race again in the fall - well done!
In addition to our club novice boat, some more experienced club scullers raced as well. Mike Griffin and Bill Davies raced in the singles event and both were pleased with their races - Bill maintained his hold on the local gold medal, and Mike claimed he rowed his best race ever.
Bill also paired with Geoff Borggaard to test their recent brief training in a double - they finished lengths ahead of all their competition!
In other news of the day, John Roger had to forego racing either his single or the double with Mike Griffin as planned, as his wife gave birth to their first child - a son - the day before the race!
USRowing Masters’ Nationals, Worcester, MA: August 10-13, 2005
Geoff Borggaard and Bill Davies raced in this USRowing event of over 1400 competitors. The race takes place at a different venue annually, and this time was held relatively close to home. On Lake Quinsigamond, during some of the summer’s hottest and most humid days, Bill successfully earned a spot in the final for the lightweight men’s “C” level singles race, where he finished 5th of 6, and only 8 seconds off the winning time. This was a very close race! He was satisfied with his first attempt racing at this level of competition. Bill and Geoff, competing in a tough doubles heat at the “B” level, finished 4th with a most respectable time, although not fast enough to get them to the close-fought final heat. Given their brief training time together, they felt they did the best they could at this regatta.
